The Brick House by Sayes Studio shatters expectations of the typical brick dwelling. Despite a tight budget, the architects crafted a surprisingly generous and delightful home. The design went on to win in the 2023 Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects National Awards.
Transforming Ordinary Materials into a Delightful Home
Responding thoughtfully to the site’s constraints and possibilities, they divided the design into two distinct zones. A lofty living area bathed in sunshine seamlessly extends to an outdoor terrace, creating a sense of spaciousness. The bedrooms are tucked discreetly above the entry, and the garage provides privacy. This project stands as a testament to the potential of ordinary, budget-friendly materials. Brick and plasterboard, often associated with uninspired spec houses, are transformed into a canvas for delightful design. Special recognition goes to the unexpected yet well-considered details: the round chrome kitchen island, a focal point, and the curved stair railing, creatively fashioned from repurposed plumbing pipe.
Brick House Paves the Way for High-Density Living
The Brick House serves as the first chapter in a potentially four-part story. As the initial residence on a site planned for multiple dwellings, it paves the way for a future where well-designed, high-density living becomes the norm in our cities. This architecturally ambitious project proves that thoughtful design and clever space planning can lead to successful outcomes, even with financial limitations, offering a glimpse into a future where maximising density goes hand-in-hand with comfortable and beautiful living spaces.
